Learn to P.L.A.Y is a unique program that will encourage the development of Physical Literacy and FUNdamental Movement Skills through age and stage appropriate games, training and coaching in a welcoming environment for children of all abilities in grades 4-8.
Learn to P.L.A.Y is a pilot project that aims to take an evidence-based approach to create a multi-sport physical activity program with the main goal of inspiring the children of Trent Hills to move more and sit less! The Northumberland Sports Council has partnered with the Municipality of Trent Hills to create and implement this one of a kind sports and physical activity program with funding provided by the RBC Future Launch: Community Challenge and the Campbellford Seymour Community Foundation.
The physical literacy framework highlights the need for instructors to take a whole-child approach to physical education. Teaching youth the specific skills needed to participate in lots of different activities in an environment that affirms their identity and increase their confidence is critical if we want the youth of Trent Hills to move more and sit less!
Each week we will highlight a different FUNdamental Movement Skills (ex: hop, throw, run, balance) paired with both traditional and unique sports (ex: bubble soccer, pickleball, goalball, soccer basketball, 4-Square). This will allow our participants to explore all the unique ways their bodies can move and will increase the number of movement skills they can perform hopefully increasing their confidence to be active on their own time. Molly and Carrie will be using the Physical Literacy Assessment for Youth (P.L.A.Y) Tool to monitor the participant’s physical literacy development and growth over the 12 sessions.
Empowering Youth Through Movement
This is a different kind of multi-sport program…
The Learn to P.L.A.Y program at the Hastings Field House is designed to give participants a healthy relationship with physical activity. Youth will participate in an interactive and empowering program designed to embrace the fun in sport and create a strong foundation for leading a healthy active lifestyle.
Each session will begin and end with a chance to get help with homework or extra time to socialize with the other participants. Molly and Carrie will infuse the unique interests and goals of our team to create an enjoyable experience for all.
Learn to P.L.A.Y has been created to specifically target youth who don’t typically like organized sport. At the end of the six weeks, participants will strengthen their leadership and social skills and gain the physical and mental strength to take on any challenge!
