The Northumberland Sports Council is a designated Regional Coordinating Centre for Heart Wise Exercise with the University of Ottawa Heart Institute.
What Is Heart Wise Exercise?
Heart Wise Exercise works with community physical activity providers to designate facilities, programs, and classes where individuals can exercise regularly to prevent or limit the effects of living with a chronic condition.
A number of fitness facilities and programs in Northumberland County have qualified for a Heart Wise Exercise designation. We are pleased that these facilities are now designated and increases access to recreational opportunities.
Facilities and programs that receive a Heart Wise Exercise designation are required to:
- Encourage regular, daily aerobic exercise
- Incorporate and encourage warm up, cool down plus self-monitoring during an exercise session
- Guide participants to exercise at a safe level and have options to increase the intensity
- Accept participants living with cardiovascular and chronic disease and those at risk
- Offer health screening
- Have a documented emergency plan with phone access to 911
- All exercise leaders are certified in CPR
- An automated external defibrillator (AED) is required to be located on site.
